Attain sat down with Jesse Grittner, SVP of Growth at Ovative Group, to launch our new Voices from Cannes series. Together, we explored why there’s no single metric that tells the full story, how measurement has evolved beyond reporting, and how brands can stay connected with consumers in a world where they no longer control the entire journey.
Grittner names this as the biggest misconception still floating around measurement: that there's one clean number or one report that fully explains what's working. CFOs and marketers both want that single source of truth, but he's clear that no individual report captures the full picture. Getting an honest read requires pulling from multiple sources and triangulating, not chasing one perfect metric.
Finance always asks some version of the same question: is it working. Grittner says that question has stayed consistent for as long as he's been in the industry. What's changed is his ability to answer it well. He can now draw a much clearer line between what a brand is doing and what's actually happening downstream, tying investment to real consumer behavior and journey data rather than a single surface-level metric.
Grittner points to a shift in how much control brands actually have over their own story. Marketers used to be able to shape how a consumer journey and a brand's perception played out. That control has eroded because anyone can publish now, meaning anyone can shape how a brand gets perceived.
The most effective marketers are the ones who know how to be part of the conversation, influence it, and stay part of it as it moves along, rather than trying to dictate it from the outside.
